Grilled Mujair with Spicy Soy Sauce
Ingredients:
For the Grilled Mujair:
- 1 whole mujair fish (approx. 400 g)
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons cooking oil
For the Spice Paste:
- 7 shallots
- 2 cloves garlic
- 7 red curly chilies
- 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
- 2 teaspoons shrimp paste (terasi)
- 1 1/3 teaspoons salt
For the Spicy Soy Sauce:
- 3 shallots, finely chopped
- 4 red bird’s eye chilies, thinly sliced
- 1/2 tomato, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 50 ml sweet soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
- 3 tablespoons warm water
Instructions:

Prepare the Fish:
- Clean the mujair fish thoroughly and make shallow cuts along its sides.
- Rub the fish with lime juice and salt. Set aside to marinate.

Make the Spice Paste:
- Blend the shallots, garlic, red chilies, coriander seeds, shrimp paste, and salt until smooth.
- Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the spice paste until fragrant and fully cooked. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Grill the Fish:
- Rub the spice paste generously over the entire surface of the fish.
- Heat a grill pan or a happy call pan over low to medium heat. Place the fish on the pan and grill until cooked through and slightly charred, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking. Remove the fish from the pan once done.

Prepare the Spicy Soy Sauce:
- In a bowl, combine the chopped shallots, sliced bird’s eye chilies, chopped tomato, salt, sweet soy sauce, lime juice, and warm water.
- Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Serve:
- Serve the grilled mujair fish hot, accompanied by the spicy soy sauce.
