Sayur Asem with Red Beans and Beef

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 kg red beans
  • 1/4 kg beef
  • 5 shallots
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 red chilies
  • 1 tomato
  • Tamarind (as needed)
  • 1 stalk green onion
  • Palm sugar (to taste)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • A pinch of seasoning powder (like Royco beef flavor)
  • 2 bay leaves

Instructions:

  1. Begin by cooking the red beans until tender. Once they are soft, set them aside.
  2. Next, cook the beef in water until it becomes tender. After cooking, cut the beef into small, bite-sized cubes.
  3. Thinly slice all the aromatic ingredients: shallots, garlic, red chilies, and tomato. Also, chop the green onion.
  4. In a pot, heat up about 1 liter of the beef broth from the previous step. If needed, add extra water to ensure there is enough liquid.
  5. Once the broth comes to a boil, add the cooked red beans and beef cubes.
  6. Incorporate the sliced shallots, garlic, red chilies, and tomato into the pot. Season with salt and palm sugar to taste. Add a pinch of seasoning powder, such as Royco beef flavor, for additional depth.
  7. Add the tamarind to give the dish a tangy flavor, adjusting the amount based on your preference.
  8. Toss in the bay leaves and allow the flavors to meld together by letting it simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  9. Once the seasoning has fully absorbed and the flavors have developed, remove the pot from heat.
  10. Serve hot, and enjoy your homemade Sayur Asem with Red Beans and Beef.
