Embark on a culinary journey with this enchanting Nasi Kebuli Sapi, a flavorful and aromatic Indonesian beef rice dish, made effortlessly using a rice cooker. This recipe blends tender beef, fragrant spices, and a touch of pineapple for a unique twist. Let’s dive into the detailed steps for creating this delightful dish!

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups (approximately 500 grams) of rice
  • 500 grams beef, cut into chunks
  • 100 grams pineapple, blended into a smooth puree
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (about 5 cm each)
  • 3 star anise
  • 7 cloves
  • 7 cardamom pods
  • 1 sachet curry seasoning (such as Indofood brand)
  • 1 small packet of ready-to-use coconut milk
  • For the Spice Paste:
    • 9 shallots
    • 6 cloves garlic
    • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
    • 3 cm turmeric
    • Salt to taste
    • Sugar to taste
    • Ground black pepper to taste
  • Water, as needed to match the rice’s measurement
  • For Garnishing:
    • Cucumber slices
    • Tomato slices
    • Fried egg (omelet)
    • Fried shallots
    • Emping (crispy melinjo chips)
    • Pickles (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients:
Begin by preparing all your ingredients. Wash the rice thoroughly and set it aside. Marinate the beef chunks in pineapple juice for about 30 minutes to tenderize the meat. After marinating, rinse the beef thoroughly to remove any residual pineapple juice.

  2. Make the Spice Paste:
To create the spice paste, blend shallots, garlic, coriander seeds, and turmeric until smooth. This paste will infuse the dish with a rich, aromatic flavor.

  3. Cook the Spices:
Heat a sufficient amount of oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the spice paste until it becomes fragrant. Add the curry seasoning, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cardamom pods, and cloves. Continue to sauté until the spices are well-combined and aromatic.

  4. Cook the Beef:
Add the marinated beef to the pan and stir until it changes color. Pour in water according to the rice measurement. Add the coconut milk and season with sugar, salt, and ground black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer, allowing the flavors to meld and the beef to become tender. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.

  5. Combine with Rice:
Transfer the beef and spice mixture into the cleaned rice cooker. Add the pre-washed rice and mix well. Set the rice cooker to the ‘cook’ setting and let it work its magic until the rice is cooked through and tender.

  6. Serve and Garnish:
Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and serve it hot. Garnish with cucumber slices, tomato slices, a fried egg, fried shallots, and emping. Pickles can be added if desired.

Enjoy this flavorful Nasi Kebuli Sapi with your favorite side dishes, and savor the rich blend of spices and tender beef in every bite. Happy cooking! 😊
