Crispy Fried Tofu Bites (Tahu Kres)

Ingredients

Firm tofu 1 ½ blocks (about 300g)
All-purpose flour 6 tablespoons
Cornstarch 1 ½ tablespoons
Baking powder 1 teaspoon
Salt To taste
Flavor powder (like BBQ or Balado) To taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter
    In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Stir until evenly combined. Set the seasoning powder aside for later use.

  2. Cut the Tofu
    Drain the tofu and cut it into bite-sized cubes, approximately 1-inch pieces.

  3. Coat the Tofu
    Gently toss the tofu cubes into the flour mixture, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Lightly press the tofu into the flour mixture to ensure it sticks, or shake them in the bowl to distribute the coating evenly.

  4. Heat the Oil
    Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat, and add enough oil to deep-fry the tofu (about 1 inch deep). Allow the oil to reach a temperature of approximately 350°F (180°C).

  5. Fry the Tofu
    Carefully add the coated tofu cubes to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the tofu until it turns golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 3–5 minutes.

  6. Drain and Season
    Once fried, transfer the tofu to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. While still warm, toss the crispy tofu with your choice of flavor powder. For a savory option, you can use a seasoning like BBQ, or a traditional Indonesian flavor such as Balado. If seasoning powders aren’t available, Masako (a popular seasoning blend) can be used as an alternative.

  7. Serve and Enjoy
    Your crispy tofu bites are ready! Serve them in a bowl or airtight container and enjoy them while they’re still hot and crunchy. Perfect as a snack or a side dish.
