Crispy Tempe Goreng Tepung (Fried Tempe in Batter)

Ingredients

Main Ingredients
1 block tempe, thinly sliced

For the Batter

Batter Ingredients
5 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tbsp cornstarch (maizena)
1 stalk green onion, finely chopped
Salt, to taste
Chicken or vegetable powder, to taste
Ground black pepper, to taste
Cold ice water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, chopped green onion, salt, chicken or vegetable powder, and black pepper. Slowly add ice-cold water, stirring gently until the batter reaches a smooth, thick consistency, similar to condensed milk. Adjust seasoning to taste. The batter should be thick enough to coat the tempe slices.

  2. Heat the Oil:
Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be enough to submerge the tempe slices for frying.

  3. Fry the Tempe:
Dip each slice of tempe into the batter, ensuring that the slices are well-coated. Carefully place them in the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown and crispy. Flip them as needed to ensure even cooking. Once crispy, remove from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Repeat until all tempe slices are fried.

  4. Serve:
Serve the crispy tempe goreng with sambal or fresh chili for a spicy kick. Enjoy!
