Brahmi Chutney: A Healthy South Indian Side Dish

Brahmi Chutney is a flavorful and nutritious condiment made from Brahmi leaves, which are known for their medicinal properties and are often used in Ayurvedic practices to promote overall health. Consuming Brahmi is believed to provide numerous health benefits, especially when eaten in the morning. This chutney pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, especially dosas, making it an excellent choice for breakfast.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Brahmi leaves 1 cup
Grated coconut 1/2 cup
White urad dal 1 1/2 teaspoons
Chana dal 1 teaspoon
Dried red chilies 4 pieces
Asafoetida A pinch
Curry leaves A few
Tamarind 12 grams (or a little piece)
Salt To taste
Coconut oil 2 teaspoons

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 15 minutes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Brahmi Leaves: Begin by cleaning and washing the Brahmi leaves thoroughly to remove any dirt or impurities.

  2. Heat the Coconut Oil: In a pan, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the white urad dal, dried red chilies, curry leaves, and a pinch of asafoetida.

  3. Cook the Dal Mixture: Stir the mixture and cook until the urad dal turns golden brown, which should take about 2-3 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.

  4. Grind the Chutney: Once the mixture has cooled, transfer it into a mixer grinder. Add the salt, tamarind, grated coconut, and Brahmi leaves along with a little water. Grind everything together until it forms a smooth paste.

  5. Serve: Transfer the chutney to a bowl and serve it immediately. Brahmi chutney pairs exceptionally well with ghee dosa or any dosa of your choice. You can enjoy it for a wholesome, nutritious breakfast or as a side dish with your favorite South Indian meal.
