Ingredients

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1/4 cup channa dal (split chickpeas)
  • 1/4 cup masoor dal (split red lentils)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dals:

    • Soak channa dal and masoor dal in water for a few hours before cooking.
    • Boil the soaked dals in water until they soften. Drain and set aside.
  2. Cook Basmati Rice:

    • Rinse basmati rice thoroughly and boil with 4-5 cups of water and salt until the grains are tender yet firm.
    • Just before draining, add turmeric powder to the rice and stir to evenly distribute. Drain and keep aside.
  3. Prepare Seasoning:

    • In a small saucepan, melt butter over low heat.
    • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon sticks, curry leaves, and cashew nuts.
    • Sauté until the seeds start to splutter and the nuts turn golden brown.
    • Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent.
  4. Combine Ingredients:

    • Add the boiled dals to the onion mixture along with turmeric powder. Mix well.
