Classic Beef Lasagna with Creamy Cheese Sauce

Beef Lasagna Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 6 sheets of lasagna noodles (pre-cooked)
  • 340 grams of corned beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 3 large tomatoes, peeled and deseeded
  • Tomato sauce
  • Barbecue sauce or spaghetti sauce
  • Ground black pepper
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Bouillon powder
  • Oregano
  • 200 ml water
  • 3 tablespoons margarine (for sautéing)
For the Cheese Sauce:
  • 3 tablespoons margarine
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 200 grams grated cheddar cheese
  • 600 ml milk (350 ml milk + 250 ml water)
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • Bouillon powder (optional)
For Topping:
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Quick-melt cheese
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Oregano

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:

    • In a pan, heat 3 tablespoons of margarine over medium heat. Sauté the finely chopped garlic and thinly sliced onion until they become fragrant.
    • Add the corned beef and peeled tomatoes to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes change color.
    • Stir in tomato sauce and barbecue sauce (or spaghetti sauce). Season with sugar, salt, ground black pepper, and oregano. Mix well.
    • Pour in 200 ml of water and let the mixture cook until it thickens and the water reduces. Adjust the seasoning to taste, then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Make the Cheese Sauce:

    • In a separate saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of margarine over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously to create a smooth paste.
    • Gradually add the milk and whisk until well combined. Stir in the grated cheddar cheese and continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and becomes bubbly.
    • Season with a pinch of sugar, salt, ground black pepper, and optional bouillon powder. Stir until the sauce is smooth and thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Assemble the Lasagna:

    • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
    • Prepare a 20 cm baking dish lined with aluminum foil. Begin by placing a layer of lasagna noodles at the bottom of the dish.
    • Spread a portion of the meat sauce evenly over the noodles.
    • Pour a layer of cheese sauce over the meat sauce.
    • Repeat the layering process (noodles, meat sauce, cheese sauce) until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of cheese sauce on top. For a neat finish, you can cut the lasagna noodles to ensure all surfaces are covered.
  4. Bake the Lasagna:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the lasagna from the oven and add the toppings: mozzarella cheese, quick-melt cheese, Parmesan cheese, and a sprinkle of oregano.
    • Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, taking care not to let the mozzarella cheese burn.
  5. Serve and Enjoy:

    • Allow the lasagna to cool slightly before slicing. Serve hot and enjoy with family and friends. This hearty dish is perfect for gatherings and will surely be a crowd-pleaser.

Notes:

  • Cooking Lasagna Noodles: To prepare the lasagna noodles, bring a pot of water to a boil, add a pinch of salt, and cook the noodles until they are just tender but not overly soft. Drain and rinse with cold water to prevent sticking.
