Cuisine: Mexican

Description:
Mexican Style Bunuelos are delicious fried dough balls, commonly enjoyed during festive seasons such as Christmas and Hanukkah. These sweet fritters are traditionally filled with a variety of ingredients, though in Spain, they are often served with sweet syrup. In this recipe, we deep-fry the dough and coat it in a perfect mix of cinnamon and sugar for a crispy, delightful treat.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour (Maida)
- 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 4 teaspoons Sugar
- 50 grams Salted Butter
- 1 Whole Egg
- 1/2 cup Milk
- A pinch of Salt
- Oil (for frying)
- To Coat:
- 2 teaspoons Caster Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Powder (Dalchini)
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Instructions:
- In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, and sugar. Set aside.
- In another bowl, combine the wet ingredients: melted butter, whole egg, milk, and salt. Whisk well until smooth.
- Slowly add the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and knead until a soft, non-sticky dough forms. Continue kneading for about 5 minutes.
- Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 10 minutes.
- While the dough rests, heat enough oil in a small pan (kadai) for deep frying.
- Pinch out small portions of the dough and roll into small balls. To check if the oil is hot, drop a small piece of dough into the oil – if it rises to the surface, the oil is ready.
- Carefully drop the dough balls into the hot oil, one by one, and fry them until golden brown and evenly cooked.
- Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
- Once cooled, coat the bunuelos with a mixture of caster sugar and cinnamon powder.
Serve these sweet fritters as a dessert with a hot chocolate or warm milk for a delightful treat. They also make a great light dessert to complement Mexican dishes like Vegetarian Bean & Cheese Enchiladas.
Enjoy the crispy, sweet goodness of Mexican Style Bunuelos!
