Tempe Melet: A Delicious Indonesian Snack

Ingredients:

Main Ingredients Quantity
Tempe 1 block
Cooking oil As needed for frying
All-purpose flour As needed
Green onions (daun bawang) A handful, chopped
Salt To taste
Flavor enhancer (optional) To taste

Filling:

Shallots (Bawang merah) 6, peeled and finely chopped
Garlic (Bawang putih) 1 clove, minced
Red chili peppers (Cabe merah kriting) 5, chopped
Bird’s eye chili (Cabe jempret) 15, finely chopped

Lemon for sambal (Jeruk sambel) 1, juiced

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tempe:
    Cut the tempe into 12 equal pieces. Create a small slit or hollow in the center of each piece. This will hold the delicious sambal filling.

  2. Make the Filling:
    Using a mortar and pestle, grind the shallots, garlic, red chili peppers, and bird’s eye chili together until smooth. Season with salt and flavor enhancer to taste. Add the lemon juice for an extra tangy kick, and mix well.

    Carefully fill each piece of tempe with the sambal mixture you just prepared, ensuring that each one is generously packed with the flavorful filling.

    In a bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, chopped green onions, water, salt, and flavor enhancer to create a smooth batter.

  5. Fry the Tempe:
    Heat enough cooking oil in a pan for frying. Dip each stuffed tempe into the flour batter and fry them until golden brown and crispy. Turn occasionally to ensure they cook evenly on all sides.

  6. Serve and Enjoy:
    Once fried, drain excess oil and serve your delicious Tempe Melet hot, crispy, and full of flavor! Perfect for a snack or part of a main meal.
