Cireng Tuna: A Delightful Indonesian Snack

Discover the deliciousness of Cireng Tuna, a savory Indonesian treat that combines the rich flavors of tuna with a crispy, chewy texture. This easy-to-make recipe is perfect for any occasion, whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply craving a delightful snack. Let’s dive into the preparation of this mouthwatering dish!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 can of tuna
  • 3 tablespoons tapioca flour (sagu tani)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 egg
  • 6 tablespoons tapioca flour (for coating)
  • For the spice mix:
    • 1 clove garlic
    • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tapioca Mixture: In a small saucepan, combine 3 tablespoons of tapioca flour with 1/2 cup of water. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and fully dissolved. Place the saucepan over medium heat, continuously stirring until the mixture thickens and transforms into a soft porridge. Once ready, turn off the heat and allow it to cool.

  2. Combine Ingredients: Once the tapioca mixture has cooled down, add the spice mix (garlic and salt), egg, and the tuna. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined, ensuring that the ingredients are evenly distributed.

  3. Heat the Oil: In a frying pan, heat a generous amount of oil over medium-high heat. You want enough oil to fully submerge the cireng, ensuring a crispy finish.

  4. Prepare the Coating: On a plate, pour out 6 tablespoons of tapioca flour. This will be used to coat the cireng before frying.

  5. Form the Cireng: Using a tablespoon, scoop out a portion of the tuna mixture and gently flatten it into a patty. Roll each patty in the dry tapioca flour to coat evenly, ensuring a lovely crispiness once fried.

  6. Fry the Cireng: Carefully place the coated patties into the hot oil. As soon as they touch the oil, ladle some hot oil over the tops of the cireng to help them cook evenly. Fry until they turn a beautiful golden brown, which typically takes about 3-5 minutes. Once they are cooked, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.

  7. Serve: Continue frying the remaining mixture until all patties are cooked. Serve your Cireng Tuna warm with a side of bottled sambal for that extra kick!

Enjoy!

These Cireng Tuna are not just easy to make; they are a perfect blend of flavors and textures that will surely delight your family and friends. Happy cooking, and enjoy your delicious homemade snacks!
