Telor Penyet Sambel Geprek: A Flavorful Indonesian Delight

Ingredients:

  • 1 large chicken egg
  • 3 watercress leaves (optional)
  • 5 pieces of crackers (optional)
  • 2 small red chilies
  • 2 large red chilies
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • Salt to taste
  • Cooking oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Egg:

    • Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Carefully fry the egg until the white is crispy and golden brown, while the yolk remains slightly runny. Season with a pinch of salt. Once fried, gently break up the yolk with a spoon to ensure it mixes with the white.
  2. Prepare the Sambel:

    • While the egg is frying, heat a small amount of oil in another pan. Add the red chilies, small chilies, and garlic. Fry until fragrant and softened, taking care not to burn them.
    • Once the chilies and garlic have cooled slightly, use a mortar and pestle to grind them into a smooth paste. Season with a pinch of salt to taste.
  3. Prepare the Garnishes:

    • Wash the watercress leaves thoroughly and pat them dry. Cut them into manageable pieces if desired.
    • Optionally, prepare the crackers by heating them until crisp and golden brown.
  4. Assemble the Dish:

    • Gently smash the fried egg using the back of a spoon or a traditional pestle, creating a slightly flattened texture.
    • Spread a generous amount of the sambel paste over the smashed egg.
    • Arrange the watercress leaves and crackers around the egg, adding them to your plate for a delightful presentation.
  5. Serve:

    • Serve immediately while the egg is still warm. Enjoy the combination of spicy sambel, crispy crackers, and fresh watercress for a satisfying and authentic Indonesian dish.
