🕒 Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
🍽️ Yield: 1 batch
Description:
I’ve shared this recipe in response to numerous requests, and although I admit to usually opting for store-bought wonton wrappers for convenience, making them from scratch can be a rewarding endeavor. These homemade wonton wrappers are surprisingly easy to make and can be a fun project for those looking to explore homemade Asian cuisine. Plus, knowing how to make them yourself ensures you have a handy recipe to rely on whenever the craving strikes!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup water (plus additional as needed)
- 1/4 cup water (for egg mixture)
- Flour or cornstarch (for dusting)
Instructions:
-
Mix the Flour and Salt:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt until evenly distributed. -
Prepare the Egg-Water Mixture:
In a small bowl, add 1/4 cup of water to the egg and gently beat them together. -
Incorporate the Wet Ingredients:
Create a well in the center of the flour mixture, then pour in the egg-water mixture. -
Combine and Knead:
Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the flour mixture, adding the remaining water as needed to form a smooth dough. Knead the dough for several minutes until it becomes elastic and cohesive. -
Rest the Dough:
Place the kneaded dough in a large bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rest for about 1 hour to allow the gluten to relax and the dough to become more pliable. -
Divide the Dough:
After the resting period, divide the dough into quarters for easier handling. -
Roll Out the Wrappers:
On a well-floured surface, take one of the dough quarters and roll it out with a rolling pin until it becomes very thin. Aim for a thickness that suits your preference, typically thinner for delicate wontons. -
Cut into Shapes:
Use a sharp knife or a cookie cutter to cut the rolled-out dough into your desired shapes, such as squares or circles, depending on your recipe needs. -
Dust and Stack:
If you’re making a large batch, lightly dust the cut wrappers with flour or cornstarch to prevent them from sticking together when stacked. -
Cover and Store:
To prevent the wrappers from drying out, cover them with plastic wrap or a damp cloth as you work through the remaining dough quarters. -
Repeat and Store:
Repeat the rolling, cutting, and stacking process with the remaining dough quarters. If you’re not using the wrappers immediately, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and store them in the refrigerator or freezer for future use.
Tips:
- For easier handling, work with one dough quarter at a time while keeping the others covered to prevent them from drying out.
- If freezing the wrappers, stack them with parchment paper or wax paper between each layer to prevent sticking.
- These homemade wonton wrappers can be used for various recipes, including wonton soup, potstickers, dumplings, and more. Experiment with different fillings and cooking methods to suit your preferences.
