Recipe Name: Homemade Whole Wheat Flour Tortillas
Cuisine: Mexican
Course: Side Dish
Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon Salted Butter

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Yield: 8 Tortillas

Instructions:

  1. Begin by combining the whole wheat flour, salt, and baking powder in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Gradually add butter and a little water at a time while kneading the dough. Continue until the dough comes together and becomes smooth and elastic. Knead for about 5 minutes to ensure the dough is soft and fluffy when cooked.
  3. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and roll them into balls.
  4. Preheat an iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Flatten each ball with your hand, then roll it out on a floured surface into a thin circle, approximately 6 inches in diameter. You can dust the dough lightly with flour as needed to prevent it from sticking.
  6. Place the rolled dough onto the hot skillet. In a few seconds, small air pockets will form. Flip the dough to the other side.
  7. Once the dough starts to puff up, turn the flame to high. Using tongs, remove the tortilla from the skillet and place it directly onto the flame to puff it up into a spherical shape.
  8. Remove from heat and place the tortilla on a flat plate. Optionally, spread a little ghee on the side facing up for extra flavor.
  9. Repeat the process for the remaining dough portions, stacking the tortillas one on top of the other.

Tip: Practice makes perfect when it comes to puffing the tortillas! If your first attempt doesn’t puff up, don’t worry—the tortillas are still delicious. Over time, you’ll get the hang of rolling and cooking them efficiently.

Enjoy these homemade whole wheat flour tortillas as a perfect accompaniment to your favorite dishes!
