Instructions:
-
Mix flour and salt together in a medium bowl.
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine 1 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, ensuring they are well mixed.
-
Make a well in the center of the flour mixture.
- Create a hollow space in the middle of the flour mixture to prepare for the wet ingredients.
-
Beat eggs slightly and add in 1/2 cup milk.
- Take 2 eggs and beat them slightly, then add 1/2 cup of milk to the beaten eggs.
-
Gradually work this into the flour, whisking until it’s smooth.
- Slowly pour the egg and milk mixture into the hollow in the flour mixture, whisking continuously until a smooth batter forms.
-
Whisk in the remaining milk.
- Gradually incorporate the remaining 3/4 cup of milk into the batter, continuing to whisk until the mixture is well combined.
-
(Optional) If you’d like a cheese popover, add 1/2 cup freshly shredded Parmesan and a dash of cayenne.
- For a cheesy variation, add 1/2 cup of freshly shredded Parmesan cheese and a dash of cayenne pepper to the batter, stirring until evenly distributed. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
-
Heat oven to 450 degrees.
- Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (232 degrees Celsius) to ensure it reaches the correct temperature for baking.
-
Preheat popover pan for 10 minutes.
- Place your popover pan in the preheated oven for 10 minutes to ensure it’s thoroughly heated before adding the batter.
-
When hot, brush popover cups with softened butter.
- Once the pan is hot, remove it from the oven and brush the inside of each popover cup with softened butter, ensuring even coverage.
-
Fill cups 2/3 full.
- Carefully pour the prepared batter into each popover cup, filling them approximately 2/3 full to allow room for rising.
-
Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes.
- Place the filled popover pan back into the oven and bake at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes, allowing the popovers to puff up and begin to brown.
-
Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 10-15 minutes longer.
- After 15 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius) and continue baking the popovers for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and fully cooked.
-
Note: Do not open oven door until popovers are done.
- Avoid opening the oven door during the baking process, as the cool air can cause the popovers to collapse prematurely.
-
The cool air will drop the temperature quickly and they’ll collapse.
- Allow the popovers to cool slightly in the pan before removing them, as they may collapse if removed too soon. Enjoy your freshly baked popovers hot from the oven!
