Whiskey Toddy Recipe 🥃

Overview:

In addition to haggis, tartan, and bagpipes, Scotland is also synonymous with mists, drizzle, cold, and damp. It is inevitable that at the end of a dreech winter’s day we should require a little something to warm the soul (even if we do have central heating and double glazing), and what better way than with a whiskey toddy. A toddy is also an excellent way to treat the common cold – it won’t cure you, but after a couple of toddies, you won’t care either!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons heather honey
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions:

Step Description
1. Dissolve a teaspoon of honey/sugar in a glass of boiling water.
2. Add a glass of whiskey and a little lemon juice, stir.
3. Serve while still hot.

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Hot Water:
Start by boiling a kettle of fresh water. While waiting for the water to boil, measure out 1 1/2 cups of hot water in a glass or mug.

  2. Sweeten with Honey or Sugar:
In the glass of hot water, dissolve 1 1/2 tablespoons of heather honey or sugar. Stir well until completely dissolved. This will add a delightful sweetness to your toddy.

  3. Add Whiskey:
Once the honey or sugar is fully dissolved, pour in a glass of whiskey. The warmth of the whiskey combined with the sweetness of the honey/sugar creates a comforting blend of flavors.

  4. Squeeze in Lemon Juice:
Squeeze in about 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. The tartness of the lemon adds a refreshing zing to the toddy, balancing out the sweetness and richness of the whiskey and honey.

  5. Stir Well:
Stir the toddy mixture thoroughly to ensure that all the ingredients are well combined. This will distribute the flavors evenly throughout the drink, creating a harmonious blend.

  6. Serve Hot:
Pour the whiskey toddy into a heatproof glass or mug. Serve it while it’s still hot to fully enjoy its warming and soothing properties.

Tips:

  • For an extra flavor boost, consider adding a cinnamon stick or a few cloves to the toddy while it steeps.
  • Experiment with different types of honey or sugars to find your preferred level of sweetness.
  • Adjust the amount of lemon juice to suit your taste preferences. Some prefer a more pronounced lemon flavor, while others prefer just a hint.
  • Serve your whiskey toddy alongside some shortbread cookies or oatcakes for a traditional Scottish treat.
