Sicilian Panini Buns Recipe

🕒 Total Time: 1 hour 42 minutes
🥖 Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Yeast Mixture:

    • In a mixing bowl, stir together the water, dry yeast, and sugar until combined.
    • Set aside and allow the yeast to bloom for about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix Dough:

    • In a separate mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of the all-purpose flour and salt.
    • Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture, stirring to form a sticky dough.
    • Knead the dough, gradually adding the remaining flour until it becomes a smooth, elastic ball, which should take approximately 5 to 8 minutes.
    • If using an electric mixer, start with the paddle attachment to combine the ingredients, then switch to the dough hook.
    • Continue adding flour until the dough is smooth and pulls away from the sides of the bowl, about 2 to 4 minutes.
  3. Let Dough Rise:

    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covering it with a dry cloth or plastic wrap.
    • Allow the dough to rise in a draft-free spot until it doubles in size, which usually takes around 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) while the dough is rising.
  5. Shape the Buns:

    • Once the dough has doubled in size, remove it from the bowl and divide it into 8 equal portions.
    • Shape each portion into either flat 5-inch rounds for buns or 6-inch oblongs for hero- or hoagie-style rolls.
  6. Final Rise:

    • Place the shaped buns on a lightly oiled baking sheet and cover them with a dry cloth.
    • Allow the buns to rise for an additional 30 to 45 minutes in a draft-free spot.
  7. Glaze and Bake:

    • Gently glaze the risen buns with beaten egg.
    • Sprinkle sesame seeds over the glazed buns, if desired.
    • Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  8. Cool and Serve:

    • Once baked, transfer the Sicilian Panini Buns to a cooling rack until they are ready to be used.

These Sicilian Panini Buns are perfect for sandwiches, whether filled with cold cuts, cheeses, or your favorite spreads. Enjoy the authentic taste and aroma of homemade bread straight from your kitchen!
