Upma Recipe

🕒 Cook Time: 15 minutes

Description:
Upma, a traditional Indian dish, offers a delightful blend of flavors and textures. While there are countless variations, this recipe presents a classic version perfect for a leisurely Sunday breakfast. You can customize it with ingredients like roasted slivered almonds or peas, but I prefer a bit of extra heat with additional green chilies and sometimes a hint of cayenne pepper. Feel free to adjust the spice level according to your taste preferences.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1/4 tsp black mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/4 cups wheat hearts (semolina)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients:

    • Heat a frying pan (dry, no oil) over medium heat.
    • Add the wheat hearts (semolina) to the pan and stir continuously until they turn a golden brown color. This step adds a nutty flavor to the dish. Once done, transfer the roasted wheat hearts to a bowl and set aside.
  2. Temper Spices:

    • Return the empty frying pan to the heat and add oil.
    • Once the oil is hot, add the black mustard seeds and cover the pan until the spluttering noises lessen, shaking the pan back and forth occasionally. This should take about 30 seconds.
    • Uncover the pan and add chopped onions, green chilies, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt. Sauté until the onions turn translucent and aromatic.
  3. Cook Semolina:

    • Add the roasted wheat hearts back to the pan along with the measured water. Stir well to combine.
    • Stir in the butter, allowing it to melt and coat the ingredients evenly.
    • Cover the pan with a lid and let the upma cook on low heat until the wheat hearts are tender and cooked through. This typically takes about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Adjust Consistency:

    • If the upma appears too dry or starts to stick to the pan, you can add a bit more water to achieve the desired consistency. Stir gently to incorporate the water evenly.
  5. Serve:

    • Once the upma is cooked to your liking, remove it from the heat.
    • Serve the upma hot, either as is or sprinkle some sugar on top for a touch of sweetness.
    • Enjoy your flavorful and comforting Indian breakfast dish!

This aromatic and wholesome upma is sure to become a favorite in your breakfast rotation. Feel free to experiment with additional ingredients and spices to make it your own!
