Konkani Style Pomfret Fry (South Indian Fish Fry)
Course: Appetizer
Cuisine: Konkan
Diet: High Protein, Non-Vegetarian
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

For the Fish:

  • 2 Pomfret fish
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil (for frying)

For the Masala:

  • 1/2 cup Fresh coconut, grated
  • 6 Dry Red Chillies
  • 8 cloves Garlic
  • 2-inch piece Ginger, chopped
  • 2 Green Chilli, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 4 Cardamom (Elaichi) Pods/Seeds
  • 4 Kokum (Malabar Tamarind)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Fish: Start by washing the Pomfret fish thoroughly. Using a knife, make three diagonal slits on each side of the fish to allow the masala to seep inside.

  2. Marinate the Fish: Sprinkle salt and turmeric powder evenly on both sides of the fish. Massage it gently to ensure the spices coat the fish well. Set the fish aside to marinate for about 10 minutes.

  3. Prepare the Masala: In a blender or food processor, combine the grated fresh coconut, dry red chillies, garlic, ginger, green chilli, cumin seeds, cardamom pods, and kokum. Blend until a smooth paste forms.

  4. Fry the Fish: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the marinated Pomfret fish. Fry on both sides until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per side.

  5. Serve: Once cooked, remove the fish from the pan and serve hot. Enjoy this crispy, flavorful Konkani-style pomfret fry as an appetizer with your favorite sides!
