Danyachi Amti (Maharashtrian Style Groundnut Curry)

Danyachi Amti is a simple and flavorful groundnut curry, commonly prepared during fasting days. Groundnuts are blended into a paste and then tempered with ghee and traditional Maharashtrian spices. The addition of buttermilk or kokum imparts a unique and delicious flavor to the dish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup groundnuts (peanuts), roasted
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk or 4 kokum pieces
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • Ghee, as required
  • 3-4 green chilies, finely chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black salt for fasting
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Preparation Time:

  • 0 mins (if pre-roasted peanuts are used)

Cooking Time:

  • 15 mins

Instructions:

  1. To prepare Danyachi Amti, first blend the roasted groundnuts into a smooth paste, using a little water to ease the process.
  2. In a saucepan, add the groundnut paste, water, salt, kokum (if using), and sugar. Mix well and cook for 5-6 minutes.
  3. If you’re not using kokum, add buttermilk and stir to combine. Simmer for another minute on low heat and then turn off the gas.
  4. For the tempering, heat ghee in a small pan. Add cumin seeds and green chilies. Let them sizzle for about 10 seconds.
  5. Pour this tempering into the curry and mix well.
  6. Serve the Danyachi Amti hot, ideally paired with sabudana khichdi for fasting days.
