Grape Wine Recipe

🍇🍷

Preparation Time: 45 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes
Yield: 5 gallons of wine

Description: In the quaint town of Frohna, Missouri, August Lueders and Sons crafted a renowned grape wine, cherished far beyond the borders of the state. With Martha, Concord, Seedling, and Niagara grapes nurtured in their vineyard, they produced a beloved libation known as “Martha Wine”. Their cellar, nestled beneath a grand general store, housed 360-gallon wooden barrels, affectionately called “hogsheads”, where the wine matured to perfection. Originally, this wine graced tables across the nation until the Volstead Act of 1918 restricted its sale solely for Communion purposes. Preserving this legacy, here’s the original recipe from August Lueders, as featured in the cookbook “Heritage of Cooking”.

Ingredients:

  • Grapes (quantity not specified)
  • 10 pounds sugar
  • Water

Instructions:

Step Description
1 Mash grapes and let ferment for 3 to 5 days.
2 Draw off 5 quarts of juice.
3 Dissolve sugar in hot water.
4 Pour all into a 5-gallon jug container.
5 Add water to fill the jug to the top.
6 Cover the jug opening with a small sand sack for 3 to 4 months.
7 Draw off and re-jug, then seal the jug with a tight-fitting cork or other kind of stopper.

This recipe encapsulates the essence of Frohna’s winemaking tradition, allowing you to recreate the allure of Martha Wine within the comfort of your own home. Let the grapes ferment, the flavors meld, and the memories of a bygone era swirl in each sip of this exquisite grape wine. Cheers to preserving heritage, one batch at a time! 🥂
