Ingredients:
- 1 cup dates
- 1 1/2 cups hot water
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup margarine
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 cup sugar (for sprinkling)
- Chocolate chips and nuts (for sprinkling)
Instructions:
- Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, combine the dates, hot water, and 1 tsp. of baking soda. Allow them to soak and cool.
- In a separate mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup of sugar, margarine, and eggs until smooth and well-combined.
- In another bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, salt, and 1/4 tsp. of baking soda.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the creamed sugar, margarine, and egg mixture, alternating with the cooled date mixture. Mix until a smooth batter forms.
- Pour the batter into a greased 9×12 baking pan, spreading it out evenly.
- Sprinkle the top of the batter with 1/2 cup of sugar, along with chocolate chips and nuts for added flavor and texture.
- Place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the dessert is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove the dessert from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for a few minutes.
