Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Water 1 cup
Sugar 1 1/2 cups
Rose Water 2 tablespoons
Phyllo Dough 1 package (16 ounces)
Margarine 1 cup
Walnuts 2 cups
Pistachios 1/2 cup
Sugar 2 tablespoons
Rose Water 2 tablespoons

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Syrup:

    • In a saucepan, bring water and sugar to a gentle boil over medium heat.
    • Allow it to simmer for about 2 minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved.
    • Stir in the rose water, then remove from heat and let the syrup cool.
    • Once cooled, refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Prepare the Filling:

    • Using a food processor or blender, grind together the walnuts, pistachios, sugar, and rose water until they form a smooth, pasty consistency. Set aside.
  3. Assemble the Baklava:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Brush a rectangular cake pan with melted margarine.
    • Carefully place a sheet of phyllo dough in the pan and brush it generously with melted margarine. Repeat this process until you have used half of the phyllo sheets and half of the margarine.
    • Spread the prepared nut filling evenly over the phyllo layers.
    • Continue layering the remaining phyllo sheets on top, brushing each layer with margarine.
    • With a sharp knife, cut the assembled baklava into 1-inch wide strips along the length of the pan. Then, cut diagonally to create diamond shapes.
  4. Bake the Baklava:

    • Place the baklava in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown.
    • Reduce the oven temperature to 300°F (150°C) and bake for an additional 10 minutes, ensuring the baklava is evenly cooked through.
  5. Syrup and Serving:

    • Once baked, remove the baklava from the oven and allow it to cool slightly.
    • Recut the pieces along the previously made lines.
    • Slowly pour the prepared syrup over the warm baklava, ensuring it is evenly distributed.
    • Let the baklava cool to room temperature, allowing the syrup to be absorbed completely into the layers.
    • Serve and enjoy the delightful sweetness of homemade baklava with friends and family!

Recipe Yield: Approximately 25 pieces

Additional Notes: Baklava is best enjoyed when allowed to rest at room temperature for several hours before serving, as this allows the flavors to meld together beautifully. Store any leftover baklava in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for longer preservation. Simply reheat in the oven before serving to recapture that irresistible freshness!
