Yields: 24 Rolls

Description:
These Farmhouse Buns are light, fluffy, and reminiscent of the old-fashioned hot rolls that my Grandmother used to bake. Found in Better Homes and Gardens Hometown Cooking magazine, this recipe promises a delightful treat for those who appreciate homemade rolls. If you enjoy the comforting taste of fresh, warm bread, give these buns a try – you won’t be disappointed!

Ingredients:

  • 2 packets active dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 to 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture: In a very large mixing bowl, dissolve 2 packets of active dry yeast in 2 cups of warm water. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.

  2. Add Sugar and Mix: Stir in 1/2 cup of sugar into the yeast mixture, then add 1 large egg, 1/4 cup melted butter, and 2 teaspoons of salt. Stir the mixture until all ingredients are combined.

  3. Incorporate Flour: Gradually stir in 6 to 6 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, using a wooden spoon. Continue to add flour until the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl.

  4. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough, adding additional flour as needed, until it becomes smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Shape the dough into a ball.

  5. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning it once to coat the surface with oil. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, which should take 45 to 60 minutes.

  6. Shape the Rolls: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and divide the dough in half. Cover the halves and let them rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, lightly grease one 15x10x1-inch baking pan or two 13x9x2-inch baking pans.

  7. Divide and Form Rolls: Divide each half of the dough into 12 equal pieces. To shape the rolls, gently pull each piece into a ball, tucking the edges under to create a smooth top.

  8. Second Rise: Place the shaped rolls into the prepared baking pans. Cover and let them rise in a warm place until they double in size, approximately 30 minutes.

  9. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  10. Brush with Butter: Before baking, brush the tops of the rolls with 3 tablespoons of melted butter.

  11. Bake: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

  12. Final Touch: Once baked, brush the rolls with any remaining melted butter for a rich, buttery finish. Allow the rolls to cool in the pans on wire racks.

Enjoy these delicious Farmhouse Buns warm from the oven, or at room temperature. They make the perfect addition to any meal, offering a comforting and nostalgic taste of homemade bread. 🍞✨
