Indulge in the rich, savory flavors of traditional Indonesian cuisine with this rustic dish of sautéed fermented tempeh. Simple, bold, and irresistibly aromatic, Oseng-Oseng Tempe is a fantastic way to elevate humble ingredients into a delightful meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients Quantity
Fermented tempeh (1-day old) 1 block
Shallots 15 cloves
Orange bird’s eye chili peppers 10 pieces
Red curly chilies 5 pieces
Tomato ½ piece
Shrimp paste (terasi) ½ package
Sugar ½ teaspoon
Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) 3 tablespoons
Seasoning (MSG or similar) To taste

Steps

  1. Prepare the Tempeh:
Slice the fermented tempeh into bite-sized pieces. Heat some oil in a pan and fry the tempeh until it is half-cooked, giving it a light golden-brown hue. Set aside.

  2. Chop the Aromatics:
Finely slice the shallots, chilies (both bird’s eye and red curly), and half a tomato. Set aside.

  3. Sauté the Shallots and Shrimp Paste:
In a preheated pan with a little oil, sauté the shallots until fragrant and golden. Add the shrimp paste and continue to stir until the paste is thoroughly mixed and aromatic.

  4. Add the Chilies and Tomato:
Toss in the sliced chilies and tomato, stirring continuously until the ingredients soften and the fragrance intensifies.

  5. Season the Dish:
Sprinkle in the sugar and seasoning, adjusting to taste. Stir the mixture well to ensure the flavors combine.

  6. Incorporate the Tempeh:
Add the half-cooked tempeh back into the pan, stirring it into the fragrant sauce. Allow the tempeh to soak in all the delicious flavors of the sautéed ingredients.

  7. Finish with Sweet Soy Sauce:
Pour in the sweet soy sauce, ensuring that every piece of tempeh is coated evenly. Stir gently to distribute the sauce, cooking for an additional few minutes until the tempeh is fully infused with flavor.

  8. Serve:
Your Oseng-Oseng Tempe Fermented Delight is ready to be enjoyed! Serve it alongside steamed rice for a hearty, comforting meal.

Enjoy the distinct, savory umami flavors of this traditional Indonesian dish. Perfect for moms or anyone looking for a quick and tasty meal.
