Ingredients:

  • 1 head of cabbage
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 1/2 onions
  • 1 green pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Dill weed, to taste
  • 1/2 cup rice
  • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cans of condensed tomato soup, diluted

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Rice:

    • Cook rice according to package directions. Allow it to cool completely. Once cooled, mix the rice with a pinch of salt and pepper, garlic powder, and dill weed. Set aside.
  2. Prep Cabbage:

    • Remove the tough ribs from the cabbage leaves and cut them into strips about 3 to 4 inches wide.
  3. Prepare Roasting Pan:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Pour a portion of the diluted tomato soup into the bottom of a roasting pan, creating a thin layer to prevent sticking.
  4. Layering:

    • Start by layering about one-third of the cabbage strips at the bottom of the roasting pan.
    • Next, spread half of the prepared rice mixture evenly over the cabbage layer.
    • Add another one-third of the cabbage strips on top of the rice, then generously pierce the cabbage leaves with a fork. This helps the flavors to permeate.
    • Pour half of the remaining diluted tomato soup over this layer.
    • Repeat the layering process with the remaining rice mixture and cabbage strips.
  5. Final Layer:

    • Pour the remaining diluted tomato soup over the top layer of cabbage.
    • Sprinkle red pepper flakes on top for an extra kick, if desired.
  6. Bake:

    • Cover the roasting pan with foil or a lid to seal in the flavors.
    • Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 2 1/2 hours, or until the cabbage turns a golden color and becomes tender.
  7. Serve:

    • Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
    • Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
