Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion
  • 2-3 chicken thighs or breasts
  • 2 blocks of tofu (adjust to taste)
  • 4 small red chilies (omit for a milder dish)
  • 1 sachet of oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato ketchup
  • 1-2 tablespoons of sweet soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • Cooking oil
  • Water, as needed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Begin by heating oil in a pan. Cut the tofu into small cubes and set aside. Rinse the chicken thoroughly.

  2. Fry Tofu and Chicken: Once the oil is hot, fry the tofu and chicken pieces in batches. You can start with either the chicken or the tofu. Cook until golden and crispy, then drain on paper towels.

  3. Shred Chicken: After the chicken cools down, shred it, separating the meat from the bones.

  4. Make Teriyaki Sauce:

    • Slice the onion into thin wedges (do not chop finely).
    • Cut the red chilies on the diagonal.
    • In a separate pan, heat some oil and sauté the onion and chilies until fragrant.
  5. Combine Ingredients:

    • Add the fried tofu and chicken to the pan with the onions and chilies.
    • Stir well to combine.
  6. Add Sauces:

    • Pour in enough water to create a sauce consistency.
    • Stir in the oyster sauce, tomato ketchup, and sweet soy sauce.
    • Mix until the sauce is evenly distributed and the color turns a rich brown. If the sauce is not dark enough, add a bit more sweet soy sauce.
  7. Adjust Flavor:

    • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  8. Thicken Sauce:

    • Dissolve the cornstarch in a small amount of water.
    • Gradually add this mixture to the sauce while stirring, until the sauce reaches your desired thickness. It should be slightly runny, not overly thick.
  9. Serve:

    • Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, turn off the heat.
    • Serve the Teriyaki Chicken and Tofu over steamed white rice.
    • Optionally, garnish with sesame seeds if desired.

This dish is rich in flavor with a harmonious balance of savory and sweet notes, perfect for a comforting meal. Enjoy your homemade Teriyaki Chicken and Tofu Stir-Fry!
