Kwetiauw Sapi Siram ala Resto Chinese Food – Delicious, Healthy, and Halal

Ingredients

For the Marinade:

  • 200-250 grams beef sirloin or sukiyaki (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (I used Cap Ikan Merah)
  • Black pepper (I used Koepoe Lada Hitam)
  • 2-3 tablespoons water
  • 1-2 teaspoons cornstarch

For the Dish:

  • 2 servings of kwetiauw (rice noodles)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cloves garlic (crushed, chopped, divided in two)
  • Chinese mustard greens (caisim) or bok choy (sliced)
  • Green onions (sliced diagonally)
  • A dash of soy sauce
  • A splash of sesame oil

For the Sauce:

  • Salt (to taste)
  • Sugar (to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)
  • Beef seasoning powder
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (I used Lee Kum Kee)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (I used Cap Ikan Merah)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 300-500 ml beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (dissolved in water to thicken)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef:

    • Thinly slice the beef and marinate it with the fish sauce, black pepper, water, and cornstarch. Set aside while you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. Prepare the Kwetiauw:

    • Boil the kwetiauw according to the package instructions until cooked. Drain and toss with a bit of soy sauce and sesame oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Cook the Egg and Kwetiauw:

    • Heat a pan over medium heat and add a little oil. Sauté half of the chopped garlic until fragrant.
    • Crack the egg into the pan and scramble it lightly, ensuring it remains fluffy and does not overcook.
    • Add the cooked kwetiauw to the pan and mix well, allowing the egg to combine with the noodles. Note that the kwetiauw should not be overly salty, as it will be covered with sauce later. Once everything is well mixed, transfer to a plate and set aside.
  4. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In the same pan, add the remaining garlic and sauté until aromatic.
    • Add the marinated beef to the pan and stir until it changes color.
    • Pour in the sauce ingredients: salt, sugar, black pepper, beef seasoning powder, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sesame oil.
    • Add beef broth or water and adjust the taste as needed.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil, then add the caisim and green onions. Cook until the greens are tender.
    • Mix the cornstarch solution into the pan to thicken the sauce to your desired consistency.
  5. Serve:

    • Pour the hot sauce over the kwetiauw and serve immediately. Enjoy the dish warm, especially on a rainy day—it’s absolutely delightful!
  6. Update:

    • Recipe updated on December 9, 2017.
