South Indian Grilled Fish with Spicy Fusion Sauce

South Indians, especially those from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, love their fish dishes with bold and spicy flavors. This fusion recipe marries smoky grilled fish with a rich, saucy, coconut-infused spice mix, perfectly balancing sour and flaky fish. Serve it alongside curd rice for a delightful, traditional South Indian meal.

Ingredients:

  • 500g Fish
  • 2 tsp Ginger paste
  • 2 tbsp Curd (Dahi/Yogurt)
  • 2 tbsp Mustard seeds (Rai/Kadugu) paste
  • 1/2 tsp Tamarind paste
  • 5 Dry red chilies
  • 2 Green chilies
  • 1/4 cup Fresh coconut, grated
  • 2 tsp Coconut oil (or sunflower oil)
  • 4 tsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds (Rai/Kadugu)
  • 1/4 tsp Chana dal (Bengal Gram Dal)
  • 3 sprigs Curry leaves
  • A pinch Black salt (Kala Namak)
  • Salt, to taste

Preparation Time: 70 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fish:
    Clean the fish and make a few slits on each side. Marinate the fish with plain salt and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, slice the fish into two halves.

  2. Make the Marinade:
    In a bowl, combine ginger paste, mustard seed paste, tamarind paste, green chilies, red chili paste, freshly grated coconut, curd, salt, and 2 teaspoons of sunflower oil. Mix well.

  3. Marinate the Fish:
    Coat the fish with the prepared spice mix and refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

  4. Grill the Fish:
    Heat a grilled iron skillet with 2 teaspoons of sunflower oil. Cook the marinated fish for about 20 minutes or until fully cooked, turning occasionally to ensure even grilling. Once done, transfer the fish to a platter.

  5. Prepare the Fusion Sauce:
    In a frying pan, heat coconut oil and add mustard seeds, dry red chilies, chana dal, a pinch of black salt, curry leaves, and grated coconut. Fry on high heat for a few minutes until the coconut turns golden.

  6. Serve:
    Pour the spicy fusion sauce over the grilled fish. Serve the South Indian Grilled Fish with Spicy Fusion Sauce alongside Jeera Rasam and Steamed Rice for a perfect South Indian dinner.
