Stir-Fried Tempe Gembus & Meatballs

Ingredients:

Ingredients Quantity
Tempe Gembus (cut into cubes) 1 block
Meatballs (quartered) 10 pieces
Chili (sliced) 7 pieces
Garlic (thinly sliced) 2 cloves
Shallots (thinly sliced) 3 cloves
Galangal (crushed) 1 thumb-sized piece
Bay leaf 1 leaf
Seasoning powder To taste
Salt To taste
Granulated sugar To taste
Sweet soy sauce (optional) To taste (skip if unavailable)
Cooking oil As needed

Steps:

  1. Prepare Ingredients
Begin by preparing all the ingredients. Slice the garlic, shallots, chili, and crush the galangal. Cut the meatballs into quarters and cube the tempe gembus.

  2. Sauté the Aromatics
Heat some cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the garlic, shallots, chili, galangal, and bay leaf. Sauté everything until fragrant, allowing the spices to release their aroma.

  3. Add Meatballs
Once the aromatics are fragrant, add the quartered meatballs. Stir everything for a minute or two, ensuring the meatballs are well coated with the seasoning.

  4. Add Tempe Gembus
Add the cubed tempe gembus to the pan. Stir everything gently to mix well.

  5. Season the Dish
Add seasoning powder, salt, and granulated sugar to taste. If you have sweet soy sauce available, add a dash for a hint of sweetness, though this step can be skipped.

  6. Taste and Adjust
Adjust the seasoning if necessary. Stir everything well and let it cook for another minute or two, allowing the flavors to blend.

  7. Serve
Once everything is cooked through and the flavors have melded perfectly, turn off the heat. Serve the dish warm and enjoy your delicious stir-fried Tempe Gembus & Meatballs!

Notes:

  • This dish is perfect for a quick and easy meal, balancing protein from tempe gembus and meatballs with the spiciness of the chili and the fragrance of traditional Indonesian spices.
  • If you’re out of sweet soy sauce, as in this version, don’t worry—the dish will still be flavorful and satisfying.
