Beef Oseng Kecap: A Flavorful Indonesian Stir-Fry

Ingredients:

  • 200 grams of fresh beef, sliced to your preference
  • 2 large red chilies (optional, for added heat)
  • 5 shallots
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 5 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, for extra depth)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon beef seasoning (optional, for enhanced flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef:
    Begin by washing the beef thoroughly and cutting it into slices according to your preferred thickness. Place the beef in a pot of boiling water and cook until the meat is tender. Once done, remove the beef from the pot, drain it, and set aside.

  2. Prepare the Aromatics:
    Slice the shallots, garlic, and red chilies (if using) thinly.

  3. Cook the Aromatics:
    Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced shallots, garlic, and chilies. Sauté until they become fragrant and the shallots are translucent.

  4. Add Sauces and Sugar:
    Stir in the sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), oyster sauce (if using), and granulated sugar. Mix well to combine.

  5. Add the Beef:
    Add the pre-cooked beef slices to the pan. Stir thoroughly to ensure that the beef is evenly coated with the sauce mixture.

  6. Season the Dish:
    Sprinkle in the ground black pepper and beef seasoning (if using). Stir again and let the mixture simmer over low heat for about 5 minutes. This allows the beef to absorb the flavors.
