Ayam dan Tahu Kecap (Chicken and Tofu in Sweet Soy Sauce)

Ingredients:

  • 1 boneless chicken breast
  • 1 block Chinese tofu
  • 2 shallots
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 large onion (Bombay onion)
  • Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), to taste
  • Salt and sugar, to taste
  • Cooking oil (such as Blue Band), for frying and sautéing

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:

    • Start by washing and cutting the chicken breast and tofu into bite-sized cubes. Lightly fry the chicken and tofu in a pan with some cooking oil until they are golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  2. Sauté Aromatics:

    • Finely chop the shallots and garlic, then blend or grind them into a paste. Slice the onion into thin rings. In the same pan used for frying the chicken and tofu, add a bit more cooking oil.
  3. Cook the Base:

    • Add the shallot and garlic paste to the pan and sauté until aromatic and slightly golden. Then add the sliced onion rings and continue to cook until they become translucent and tender.
  4. Combine Ingredients:

    • Return the fried chicken and tofu to the pan. Pour in the sweet soy sauce to coat the ingredients thoroughly. Season with salt and sugar to taste.
  5. Simmer:

    • Add a small amount of water to the pan to help the flavors meld together. Stir occasionally and let it simmer until the sauce is well combined and slightly thickened.
  6. Serve:

    • Once the chicken and tofu are fully cooked and the sauce has absorbed into the ingredients, remove from heat. Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy!

This flavorful and savory dish pairs wonderfully with steamed rice or can be served as part of a larger meal. Enjoy the delightful combination of tender chicken and tofu enveloped in a rich, sweet soy sauce!
