Spicy Sweet Soy Beef (Daging Sapi Kecap Cabe Gendot)

Discover a delightful fusion of flavors with this Spicy Sweet Soy Beef recipe. Combining tender beef cubes with a rich, savory sauce and a touch of heat, this dish offers a delectable balance of sweet, spicy, and umami notes. Perfect for a hearty meal, this recipe is a fantastic choice for those who enjoy a flavorful, comforting dish.

Ingredients

  • 250 grams beef, cut into cubes
  • 4 large red chilies (cabe gendot), sliced thickly
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon white pepper powder
  • 4 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 700 ml water
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Salt and chicken bouillon powder to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil: Begin by heating the cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion, sautéing until they release their fragrant aroma and turn golden.

  2. Add the Chilies: Introduce the sliced red chilies to the pan. Cook briefly to allow their flavors to meld with the onions and garlic.

  3. Incorporate Liquids and Seasonings: Pour in the water, sweet soy sauce, and oyster sauce. Stir in the white pepper powder and season with salt and chicken bouillon powder to taste. Adjust the seasoning to your preference.

  4. Cook the Beef: Add the beef cubes to the pan, mixing well to coat the meat with the sauce. Allow the mixture to simmer, letting the flavors infuse and the beef become tender. If the beef is not yet tender, add more water as needed and cover the pan with a lid. Continue cooking until the beef is fully cooked and tender.

  5. Add the Tomato: Once the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened slightly, stir in the diced tomato. Adding the tomato at the end helps maintain its fresh flavor and prevents it from becoming overly mushy.

  6. Serve: Remove from heat once the tomatoes have softened slightly. Serve the Spicy Sweet Soy Beef hot, enjoying the vibrant mix of flavors and the tender beef.

This dish pairs beautifully with steamed rice and makes for a satisfying meal that’s rich in flavor and comfort. Enjoy! 🍖
