  • 1 cup tamarind water
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp whole black pepper
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 2 tsp toor dal (pigeon peas)
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Soak all the ingredients for the masala paste in water for 30 minutes. You can add a little water while grinding the paste. Extract tamarind juice and discard the remaining tamarind.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the tamarind juice, masala paste, chopped tomatoes, and curry leaves. Cook for 10 minutes.
  3. After 10 minutes, add salt and stir. If the consistency is thick, add a little water. Cook for another 5 minutes and then turn off the heat.
  4. In a small tempering pan, heat ghee and add mustard seeds. After 10 seconds, add a pinch of asafoetida and turn off the heat.
  5. Add the tempering to the Rasam and mix well.
  6. Serve hot with rice, papad, and side dishes like Keerai Sambar, Carrot Beans Thoran, and enjoy a hearty South Indian meal!
