- 2 Onions, finely chopped
- 2 Tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1-inch Ginger, grated
- 3 cloves Garlic
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder (Dhania)
- ½ tsp Red Chilli powder
- ½ tsp Turmeric powder (Haldi)
- 2 Cloves (Laung)
- 1-inch Cinnamon Stick (Dalchini)
- 2 Cardamom (Elaichi) Pods/Seeds
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds (Saunf)
- 3 sprigs Mint Leaves (Pudina), roughly chopped
- 2 Bay leaves (Tej Patta)
- Oil, as required
To grind into a masala:
- 2 tbsp Poppy seeds, soaked in hot water
- ¼ cup Fresh coconut, grated
- 5 Cashew nuts

- Soak the horse gram dal for at least 2 hours in warm water or overnight. Drain the water once soaked.
