Beef Bowl (Gyudon) à la Yoshinoya – Halal Recipe

Discover a Halal version of the classic Japanese Beef Bowl, or Gyudon, inspired by the popular Yoshinoya recipe. This delightful dish features tender beef simmered in a savory-sweet sauce, served over a bowl of steaming rice. Follow this step-by-step guide to recreate this comforting meal at home, perfectly suited for those who adhere to Halal dietary practices.

Ingredients:

  • 300 grams sukiyaki beef: Thinly sliced, this cut is perfect for quick cooking and tender bites.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce: Preferably Kikkoman, or any soy sauce of your choice.
  • 1 tablespoon teriyaki sauce: Also Kikkoman is recommended, but any brand will work.
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar: Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the savory flavors.
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar: Provides a tangy contrast to the rich sauce.
  • 1 1/2 onions: Sliced thinly into elongated strips.
  • 3 cloves garlic: Grated or finely minced.
  • 2 cm ginger: Grated for a fragrant, warming kick.
  • 1/2 tablespoon dashi powder: Or substitute with mushroom or beef stock powder.
  • Salt: To taste, use sparingly as soy sauce adds saltiness.
  • Pepper: To taste, for a hint of spice.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a non-stick skillet or pan, combine the soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, apple cider vinegar, and granulated sugar. Heat over medium-high heat until the mixture comes to a boil, ensuring the sugar dissolves completely.

  2. Cook the Beef: Add the sukiyaki beef slices to the boiling sauce. Cook until the beef is fully cooked and has changed color. Ideally, let the beef release its juices during cooking, which will enhance the flavor of the sauce. Once done, remove the beef from the pan and set aside.

  3. Sauté the Aromatics: In the same pan, without cleaning it, add the sliced onions, grated garlic, grated ginger, and dashi powder. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook until the onions are translucent and slightly softened.

  4. Combine and Simmer: Return the cooked beef to the pan with the onions and other ingredients. Stir well to combine all the flavors. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes so that the beef absorbs the flavors of the sauce and aromatics. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.

  5. Serve: Serve the beef mixture over bowls of steamed rice. Garnish with additional scallions or sesame seeds if desired.

Enjoy your homemade Gyudon, a hearty and satisfying meal that brings a taste of Yoshinoya right to your kitchen, and meets Halal dietary requirements.
